Attingham Park: House, Grounds and Planning Your Visit

Attingham Park brings together a mansion, parkland and a walled garden at Atcham, with separate admission choices for the house and grounds.

  • Prison visits and regional experiences compared
  • Town walks, river and countryside planning
  • Practical transport and seasonal advice

Visiting Attingham Park

Attingham Park at Atcham offers a choice between time outdoors in the grounds and a visit that also includes the mansion. The Walled Garden is another part of the estate to consider when planning your day. Check the opening calendar for each part before travelling: the house, park and garden do not necessarily follow the same daily hours.

From Shrewsbury you can use a local bus followed by a walk, or travel by car. Your choice affects how much time you need at either end of the visit. For the wider journey, see getting to Shrewsbury; for another outdoor day, explore Long Mynd.

House, grounds and Walled Garden

Begin by deciding whether the mansion is important to your visit or whether your time is better spent outside. The grounds-only and house-and-grounds admission categories let you make that choice. If you want to see the house, check its opening times independently of the park rather than assuming that an open gate means the interior is open too.

The Walled Garden provides a different setting within the estate. Build some flexibility into the day so you can spend time outside when the weather suits and adjust your plans if conditions change. A waterproof layer and comfortable shoes are useful for a visit that includes the grounds. Check the calendar close to departure, especially when travelling in a different season from the one shown on an earlier search.

Admission and National Trust membership

The admission categories distinguish the grounds from the house and grounds. The published tariff also distinguishes prices with Gift Aid from prices without it. Compare like with like when choosing an option, and check the current rates for your date and the composition of your group. Family categories are available, so it is worth looking at those alongside individual tickets.

National Trust members and children under five have free entry. Non-members pay on arrival. Bring your membership details if applicable and check which areas are open on the day. A grounds visit and a house visit have different admission choices, so decide what you want to see before selecting your ticket rather than relying on a single headline price.

Getting there by bus or car

The estate gives bus 97 from stand S at Shrewsbury Bus Station as an option. It describes a journey of about 15 minutes to Atcham, followed by a walk of approximately 15 minutes. There are a few services daily except Sunday. Check the current timetable and fare for your date, including the return, before building your day around the bus.

If you drive, leave time for the journey and check the estate's current arrival information. A car can also make it easier to combine separate rural destinations, but the house and garden still need their own opening checks. Our Ludlow guide offers another regional day out, with a direct rail connection from Shrewsbury.

Visiting with a dog and choosing a season

Dogs are welcome on leads in the outdoor areas, apart from designated off-lead spaces. Assistance dogs are also welcome inside. If you are travelling with a dog, consider whether your group wants to spend most of its time outside or divide its visit between the grounds and the house.

Season and weather affect the balance between a garden walk and an indoor visit. Check the separate house, park and garden hours for the actual day, rather than treating a summer calendar as a winter timetable. The weather and seasons guide can help you plan clothing and alternatives, but a forecast and the estate calendar remain the useful checks immediately before departure.
