Long Mynd and Carding Mill Valley

Long Mynd is an area of open hills in the Shropshire Hills, with Carding Mill Valley near Church Stretton as a useful starting point. The landscape makes a change from the streets of Shrewsbury, but it calls for a different kind of preparation. Paths can be uneven and steep, and open ground offers little shelter from changing conditions.

Choose a walk to suit your group and leave time for the journey as well as the route itself. Church Stretton station is approximately one mile from Carding Mill Valley, making rail and walking a practical combination. For the wider trip see getting to Shrewsbury, and for another rail outing consider Ludlow.

Walking on Long Mynd

The Lightspout Waterfall walk is one route from the valley. It is listed as 2.8 miles, or 4.48 km, and includes sections described as challenging. The waterfall is approximately four metres high. Distance alone does not convey the steepness or the uneven surfaces, so look at the route description before deciding if it suits everyone in your party.

Wear appropriate footwear and carry layers, rain and wind protection, sun protection and drinks. Tell someone where you intend to go and when you expect to return. Conditions on exposed higher ground can feel different from those in the valley. Take particular care on wet or unstable ground and adjust your route if the weather or the group makes the original plan unsuitable.

Getting there without a car

Church Stretton station is around one mile from Carding Mill Valley. Check train times for both directions and allow for the walk between the station and your chosen starting point. That extra distance matters when comparing the length of a hill route with the total distance you will cover during the day.

The Shropshire Hills Shuttle had a limited weekend season from 9 May to 27 September in 2026. Treat it as a seasonal option rather than assuming it runs whenever trains do. Check the relevant timetable for your date and plan a return that does not depend on a service outside its season.

Driving and parking

Access is via Church Stretton, west of the A49. The Carding Mill Valley car park can fill at weekends and during school breaks, so allow flexibility rather than relying on a particular arrival time guaranteeing a space. Parking can be paid for at machines or through JustPark. National Trust members need to register their membership for free parking.

Check current access information and the parking terms before travelling. Even after arriving by car, the paths you choose may include steps, slopes and uneven sections. Select your walk with the whole group in mind and consider how conditions might affect the return journey as well as the outward leg.

Grazing animals, dogs and the landscape

Long Mynd Common is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is also used for grazing. Sheep and ponies belong to local commoners. Give animals space, close gates behind you, take litter home and avoid trampling plants. If cycling, approach animals slowly and show consideration to other people using the area.

Keep dogs under close control. The local guidance requires leads during lambing from March to May and for ground-nesting birds from March to July; use a short lead around sheep. Carry bags and dispose of dog waste. These precautions protect wildlife and livestock while helping everyone enjoy the landscape.

For a different kind of outdoor visit, Attingham Park combines grounds and a garden with a house. Check its own dog and admission arrangements separately. Our seasonal guide gives wider context, while the forecast for your actual walking day should guide your final choice.
