Planning a day in Ludlow

Ludlow in Shropshire makes a rewarding change of pace from Shrewsbury. Its castle stands at Castle Square, and the direct train makes the town a practical choice for a day without a car. The rail journey from Shrewsbury takes approximately 30 minutes. Allow time for the castle itself as well as the journey, and check the train timetable for your chosen date before setting out.

The castle and the gin experience described here are separate visits. The latter takes place at a distillery in Bromfield, so plan the onward journey independently rather than assuming the station is its meeting point. Ludlow Castle and Castle Square

Ludlow Castle has Norman origins and includes structures from different periods. Its setting on Castle Square provides a clear starting point for exploring the town. The surviving buildings are a ruin, so choose footwear and clothing for an outdoor visit and check conditions before travelling. There is limited shelter from the weather, and adverse conditions can lead to partial or complete closure.

Think of the castle as the central visit rather than a brief stop on the way to the distillery. Its admission is arranged separately. Check the current admission options for your party and date when planning, particularly if you are combining a timed activity elsewhere with the castle. The castle does not have its own visitor car park, so drivers should plan where to leave the car before arrival.

Opening seasons and admission

The castle's regular timetable changes through the year. From January to mid February it normally opens at weekends, from 10:00 to 16:00. From mid February to the end of March it normally opens daily at those hours. From April to the end of October the regular closing time is 17:00, before returning to 16:00 through early January. Christmas Day is excluded, and festivals or private events can cause additional closures.

Last admission and re-entry are 45 minutes before closing. On ordinary opening days advance online booking is not compulsory; book ahead for special events. Children under five enter free, though a free ticket must still be selected when booking online. Check the date-specific calendar before travelling, as events and weather can change the regular seasonal pattern.

Gin making near Bromfield

The gin experience is based at a distillery in Bromfield, outside the castle visit. It includes a guided distillery tour, use of a small copper still, botanicals and ingredients, four spirit tastings, drinks and a bottle of your own gin. Meals and transport to and from the venue are extra. Check the meeting details and arrange the connection to Bromfield before booking, especially if you plan to return by train.

If your group prefers a different activity, the regional tours page also introduces a cooking experience in Ludlow. For a contrasting outdoor day, consider Long Mynd and Carding Mill Valley. Both require their own travel plans rather than being extensions of the castle admission.

Practical questions about Ludlow

Can I visit Ludlow by train from Shrewsbury?

Yes. The direct journey takes approximately 30 minutes. Check services for the day and leave enough time for the return, particularly if you have booked a separate activity.

Must I book the castle in advance?

Online advance booking is not compulsory on ordinary opening days. Special events should be booked ahead, and it is sensible to check the castle calendar for closures before travelling.

Can I take a dog to the castle?

Dogs are allowed on a lead. Allow for the outdoor conditions and the uneven nature of a ruined castle when deciding how much time to spend there.

Is the gin experience at the castle?

It takes place at a distillery in Bromfield. Castle admission and transport to the distillery are separate arrangements.
