Shrewsbury Castle: grounds and museum

Shrewsbury Castle stands on Castle Street close to the railway station, making it a convenient stop on a town itinerary. Its grounds are free to enter, while the Soldiers of Shropshire Museum has a separate admission charge. Decide whether you want a walk around the grounds, time in the museum, or both, and check the seasonal calendar before you travel.

The distinction matters when planning a family visit or a short stop between trains. A walk outside and a museum visit have different costs and may require different amounts of time. Combine the castle with the old town and museum on The Square, or read the wider history of Shrewsbury before you arrive.

Soldiers of Shropshire Museum and admission

The museum is the indoor part of the visit and has its own ticket. The published 2026 tariff lists adults aged 18 and over at £8, a concession at £6 and children at £4. Children under five and former members of the Shropshire regiments enter free. A family ticket is listed at £20 for two adults and up to three children. Check the current categories and prices when arranging your visit.

The grounds are free, and a suggested donation is voluntary rather than an additional admission fee. If only part of your group wants to see the museum, use the distinction to plan a meeting point and decide how long to spend at the site. The museum's published access information can also help you decide which areas suit your party before purchasing admission.

Opening dates and winter planning

The museum's 2026 season runs from 14 February to 12 December. Its published regular hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10:30 to 16:00, with Sunday and Monday closed. Check the current calendar for your chosen day, especially around public observances or special events, rather than assuming that the same hours apply to every date.

The winter closure begins on 13 December 2026 and continues until the February school break in 2027. Check the reopening date when it is announced. For a town itinerary outside the museum season, use our things to do guide to consider other indoor and outdoor stops, each with its own opening arrangements.

Access, families and facilities

Portable ramps provide access to the main hall, parts of the ground floor, the shop and an accessible toilet. Some exhibitions remain inaccessible to wheelchair users, and the slopes may mean that a companion is needed to help push a wheelchair. Contact the museum about your individual needs before visiting so that you can plan the parts of the site that work for you.

Picnics are permitted in the grounds, which gives families an option for a break during a town day. Assistance dogs are welcome; other dogs are not allowed in the grounds. The site is a non-smoking area. Take the weather into account when deciding how much of the visit to spend outside and check the museum calendar if an indoor stop is important to your plans.

From the station and parking

From Shrewsbury station the museum gives a route of approximately 220 metres using steps or 260 metres on a step-free route, each taking about three minutes. Choose the route that suits your group and allow extra time if slopes or luggage affect your pace. The short station connection also makes the castle useful as a first or last stop on a rail day.

There is normally no visitor parking on the castle grounds. Visitors with particular access needs can ask in advance. For a wider choice, look at town parking or park and ride, checking the individual site's current charges and arrangements. Frankwell can flood after prolonged rain; a step-free route to the centre goes via Welsh Bridge. Our arrival guide covers the wider journey.

Nearby, Shrewsbury Prison is a separate historical attraction with its own visit options. Give each place its own time in your schedule instead of assuming that a ticket for one covers the other. If you prefer a longer walk, return through the centre towards The Square and the river.
